Gentrification at it's worst?
(Is this what they need?)
I was struggling to find inspiration to blog.
So I come in from a walk and see the president hugging two black girls in Biloxi Mississippi. They are crying telling him there stories. He’s rubbing their shoulders and I guess playing out the compassionate conservative thing. Then he turns, in an obvious attempt to position the three of them…for a photo opportunity. Yes, a photo Opp. I wanted to give him the benefit of the doubt but he’s not looking at the girls anymore, he’s looking towards the cameras, posing for them. And above the voices of the girls I can hear the flickering of all the flash photography.
Then flash to pictures of military vehicles driving thru high water. Bob Shieffer tells us they have their orders. Bring water, food and help to establish order, to “take back the city” My point is if the National Guard is bringing food and water there is no need to retake the city.
I heard one grocery store is opening its doors and letting people have stuff for free. Isn’t that the spirit? Not sending guns to make sure they don’t steal, but give it away. It’s like who are you going to sell it to anyway? There aren’t any customers. There is no economy. Your goods aren’t good for anything if the customers don’t survive.
I was talking to another friend Cam today about how New Orleans is 67% black. She was saying that this might be gentrification at it’s worst. She says…
” You think of the gentrification trend, there's really no rush to help these people. Those who own land have no claim if they're dead…. those who don't will lose their homes to those with money once they do rebuild.”
I was like, good point.
If that’s not it, then you explain it to me. I’ve been looking all day to get the transcripts from last night’s Nightline. Ted Koppel got in the hinder parts of the FEMA director, Micahel Brown. Koppel asked pointed questions, and Brown had no answers; just 'talk points.' He asked why the support hasn’t made it there, Brown’s like it’s on the way. Ted: these people needed it yesterday. It was so classic. I was happy to see someone have their journalistic integrity and not let an official off of the hook. Not afraid to ask the tough questions. The FEMA director got his butt whupped last night and it made me feel good for a moment.
Today though, I found out that one of my friends and her fiancé are alive, but they can’t get out of New Orleans. It made me mad again. And so here’s my blog.
Btw the president is ‘flying over’ the N.O. I guess he’s already got his photo opp for the day.
Check out this radio commentary on the subject.
